Training model:

NES fund and train Psychology staff, who are embedded within local CAMHS teams, to deliver LIAM training and coaching. These Psychology staff offer a two-day training and follow-up small group coaching to staff in children services, e.g., School Nurses etc., who then deliver the 9 session LIAM intervention to targeted children and young people.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

The half day LIAM awareness raising training is for any staff in an implementation setting. The two-day training and follow-up coaching are for staff who intend to deliver the 9 session LIAM intervention to targeted children and young people. This entry refers to staff who complete the 2 days of LIAM training and engage in delivery of the LIAM intervention to children and young people with coaching from a local NES-funded Psychologist.

Quality dimensions

Usability

Manualised intervention with coaching to establish skills in practice and manage governance and care pathways to ensure the correct CYP receive LIAM and risk is managed.

Supports

Supports - Workforce

Staff will need ring-fenced time to attend training and coaching and deliver the LIAM intervention to CYP. Extensive implementation supports are provided by NES consistent with Implementation Science principles. The LIAM training is fully operationalised within a delivery manual that includes all training materials, session plans, workbooks, details about routine clinical outcome measures. All of this is consolidated and and behaviourally rehearsed during coaching sessions.

Supports - Technology

LIAM can be delivered online and delivery staff would need access to technology to support this, e.g., a laptop / iPad.

Supports - Administrative

For in person delivery, room bookings required and rooms must be private and free from interuptions. Appointments will need to be made for CYP. Any case files or notes must be securely stored consistent with information governance principles.

Supports - Financial

All materials, training and coaching is provided by NES free of charge. NES does not fund delivery staff time or overheads.

Evidence base

CBT-informed evidence-based intervention. Based on 40+ years of evidence. About 60% of CYP who receive this intervention should benefit from it. The Matrix Evidence Tables Children and Young People (PDF)

Routine clinical Outcome Measures are completed pre and post intervention (Revised Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Evaluation of Service Questionnaire) as well as at each session to measure progress (Goal Based Outcomes) and governance / risk (YP Core / CORE 10).


Impact assessments

Reaction

Yes - ILO ratings are compared pre and post training and workshop evaluation forms completed.

Learning

Learning is consolidated and skills demonstrated during small group coaching from NES-funded Psychology staff.

Behaviour

Changed work practices are demonstrated and rehearsed during coaching sessions, this can include review of videoed sessions with CYP as well as re-enactments and behavioural rehearsal of techniques.

Results

Clinical outcome measures are collected for every child and young person pre and post intervention and returned to NES. Analyses show LIAM delivers highly significant reductions in distress and progress towards goals for CYP.
