The training enables practitioner to use the Newborn Observational (NBO) System. The NBO is a tool used to support and strengthen the infant-parent relationship in newborn period from birth to 3 months. It can be used to support parents see their infant’s capacities, to help them see the baby’s uniqueness, competencies and vulnerabilities and to then respond to their baby in a way that is meeting their needs.

The training involves a 2-day in-person or online training. Learners will have to undertake pre-reading and learning prior to the training.

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) endorse and commission this training via the Parenting workstream.

Training model:

Training accessed through NES is for multisector early years practitioners who work directly with parents in the neonatal period. Prerequisites for training include a relevant professional qualification and an understanding of newborn behaviour and development.

Training is delivered through presentations, interactive exercises and live or video demonstration with a newborn baby and parent.

Following the 2-day training practitioners work towards certification. This involves completing 5 practice NBO sessions with families, practitioners then complete recording forms and gather parent questionnaires for each NBO. This paperwork must then be approved by a Neonatal Evaluation Officer to reach certification status.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

Practitioners will require protected time for pre-learning and the 2-day training.

Quality dimensions

Usability

Course aims are:

  • Understand how newborn babies communicate
  • Know about different behavioural states of infants
  • Understand infants’ self-regulatory behaviours
  • Know the signs of overstimulation or need for a break
  • Learn soothing techniques to console the baby
  • Understand how to support parent in a strength-based way

Practitioners are provided with a manual that guide them through a set of observations. Each observation conducted is guided by the baby and so the items administered is guided by the child in the moment.

Supports - Workforce

Practitioners will require ringfenced time to attend the 2 day training and for pre-training reading.

Once trained practitioners’ observations will take from 5 minutes to 20 minutes depending on the state of the baby. The use of the NBO can be integrated into practitioners ongoing clinical contact with a family.

Supports - Technology

No technology support is required to administer the NBO. If practitioners are attending online training or supervision a devise with appropriate software and internet connection is required.

An internet enabled devise is also required to access the online resources.

No additional administrative support is required.

If accessing training through NHS Education for Scotland (NES) all training costs, materials and manuals are provided by NES.

The post training questionnaire gathers feedback about the training.

Learning

The Pre-post training questionnaire measures the difference in attendees confidence on a range of infant observation tasks.

Behaviour

Following the 2-day training practitioners work towards certification. This involves completing 5 practice NBO sessions with families, practitioners then complete recording forms and gather parent questionnaires for each NBO. This paperwork must then be approved by a Neonatal Evaluation Officer to reach certification status.  Supervision sessions are offered, by the developer and are open to all trained practitioners, where skills can be discussed and developed.

Results

The Parent Questionnaire can be used to continue to measure impact of the tool on parents and gather feedback.
