Solihull Approach Foundations - Train the Trainer

This training allows practitioners to cascade the Solihull Approach through their service as a means of building sustainable capacity within the workforce.

This is a 1 day workshop which can be delivered in person or online.

There is a cost for NHS Scotland as the training is provided by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) staff.

The training is a manualised training – Solihull Train the Trainers resource.   

Training model:

The training is available for practitioners who have completed the 2day Solihull Approach Foundation Level training.  The learning is delivered through a workshop either online or in-person and comprises of a revision of the key elements of the Foundation Level training, as well as fostering skills in training delivery and participant engagement. Once practitioners have undertaken this training, they are recognised as Solihull Approach Trainers and can go on to deliver Foundation Level Training.

Practitioners trained through NES are offered a follow-up session with NES staff and there is the opportunity to link with other practitioners (via MS Teams channel) and Trainers Network meetings.  Training manuals are provided to support practitioners in delivery.  Resource updates and developments are disseminated through the MS Teams channel and the Trainers Network meetings.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

The workshop duration is a full day.  Practitioners will also require time after the workshop and prior to delivering the training to become familiar with the training and the manual.  This will vary depending upon practitioner needs.

Usability

ILOs for those attending the training are available in the form of ‘key messages’ within the trainers’ manual.  These are:

  1. Prepare well.
  2. Know the key messages for every session (outlined within the ILO section).
  3. Follow the manual.

The training is supported by a manual (every delegate requires access to a manual) and a powerpoint presentation.

Supports

Supports - Workforce

Practitioners will require sufficient time to attend the workshop, to become suitably familiar with the training manual and to engage with any follow-up supports.  Practitioners will also require time prior to delivering the training for preparation and afterwards for reflection/learning for future sessions.  This is discussed during the training itself, along with discussion about plans to cascade (and barriers to this) and ways of encouraging delegates who will be attending the cascades to integrate the approach into their practice.

Supports - Technology

If attending the workshop online an internet enabled device is required.  Practitioners will also require access to equipment to present slides/videos as per the cascade model.

Supports - Administrative

To collate delegate lists, maintain record of practitioners trained, arrange and send out training materials (manuals, certificates, agreement/code of practice), to arrange and support workshops (either online or in person).

Supports - Financial

NES provides financial support through the provision of training, follow-up support and manuals.

Evidence base

The Solihull Approach is based upon the application of child development and well-established psychological theory to practice and underpinned by existing research evidence in early brain development and the importance of early relationships and experience.

There is an evidence base for the Solihull Approach in general as outlined here   Solihull approach parenting - Our impact and evidence-base with studies demonstrating improvements in the following: the parent-child relationship, child prosocial behaviour, behaviour difficulties, parental anxiety and stress, and practitioner satisfaction. 

Training is delivered using the same principles that guide the Solihull Approach, with trainers modelling the concepts of containment and reciprocity during the training.  Learning is through instructive presentation (including the use of video), group discussion and theory to practice tasks.

Evaluation forms are completed at the end of training.  

Learning

Practitioners go on to deliver foundation level training (numbers of trainings delivered are collected by NES along with evaluation forms)

Behaviour

Practitioners will have delivered trainings - data is collected regarding the number of cascade trainings (and number of participants attending the trainings) provided by practitioners (this is provided to NES and Solihull Approach)  and the evaluation forms completed by those attending the trainings (provided to Solihull Approach).

Results

Evidence from peer reviewed studies of the Solihull Approach demonstrate improvements in the following: the parent-child relationship, child prosocial behaviour, behaviour difficulties, parental anxiety and stress, and practitioner satisfaction.
