This resource is one of a series of 5 short leaning bytes designed to support staff to develop their knowledge and practice at the Skilled Level of the Knowledge and Skills Framework for Mental Health Improvement, and Prevention of Self-Harm and Suicide (KFS). 

Each learning byte focuses on a different topic, but they are all connected; some themes run through them all and they link back to each other where required. They can be completed in any order. The learning bytes are designed to be used flexibly by individuals, teams, organisations and training providers to meet local learning and development needs and priorities.  

This is an across the life span learning resource, with a Part B focusses on children and young people.

This learning byte focuses on the factors that might cause people to
think about suicide, working with people to assess their risk of suicide, conversations that enable people to talk about their thoughts of suicide, when to seek emergency support and intervention for people at risk of suicide, practical and emotional approaches to supporting people at risk of suicide. In addition to this part B includes information about children and young people who may be at risk of suicide

On-line PDF has an accompanying online pdf facilitation guidance which enables group delivery.

Training model:

The resource is designed to be completed on an Individual basis however accompanying facilitator resource also means that it can be delivered as groups learning. Access to the facilitator pack is by applications on the TURAS pages. Applicants are required to provide an outline of appropriate skills and level of experience they have for delivery of this resource to groups of learners. A facilitators network has been established to provide a community of practice sharing experiences and wider peer learning.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

It can be delivered in two forms:

  1. Delivered as a facilitated workshop 8-10 people, 150 minutes.
  2. Read through of PDF without completion of the learning tasks 60mins

Individual learning will vary depending on completion of the reflective learning tasks within the module the participant.

Time commitment would be depended on whether the resources is completed on an individual basis or in group learning with use of the facilitation pack.
