This resource is one of a series of 5 short learning bytes designed to support staff to develop their knowledge and practice at the Skilled Level of the Knowledge and Skills Framework for Mental Health Improvement, and Prevention of Self-Harm and Suicide. 

Each learning byte focuses on a different topic, but they are all connected; some themes run through them all and they link back to each other where required. They can be completed in any order. The learning bytes are designed to be used flexibly by individuals, teams, organisations and training providers to meet local learning and development needs and priorities.    

This learning byte includes the different reasons why people self-harm, understanding self-harm as communication of distress, some common misconceptions about self-harm, impact of thoughts, feelings and emotions on self-harm, adopting a sensitive, compassionate and non-judgemental approach when talking about self-harm, risk and protective factors associated with self-harm, ways you can positively respond to and talk about self-harm.

The content is relevant across the lifespan, including young people. Two of the four case studies used as throughout the resource are young people.

Training model:

The resource is designed to be completed on an Individual basis however the accompanying facilitator resource also means that it can be delivered as group learning. Access to the facilitator pack is by applications on the TURAS pages. Applicants are required to provide an outline of appropriate skills and level of experience they have for delivery of this resource to groups of learners. A facilitators network has been established to provide a community of practice sharing experiences and wider peer learning.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

It can be delivered in two forms:

  1. Delivered as a facilitated workshop 8-10 people, 150 minutes.
  2. Read through of PDF without completion of the learning tasks 60mins

 

Individual learning will vary depending on completion of the reflective learning tasks within the module the participant.

  • Define self-harm and have an awareness of some facts around the prevalence of self-harm across the life span.
  • Have an awareness of the different reasons why people self-harm and identify some common misconceptions surrounding self-harm.
  • Have an awareness of the importance of adopting a sensitive, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach when talking about self-harm.
  • List some of the risk and protective factors associated with self-harm.
  • Be aware of the relationship between self-harm and suicide risk.
  • Be aware of the importance of adhering to local, national, or professional policies, guidelines and standards when working with someone who is self-harming.
