Impact Assessments:

A 1-hour bitesize training module at the Skilled Practice Level, to increase awareness of how anxiety may present in paediatrics, understanding anxiety and the basic anxiety management strategies that can be used and promoted.

 

Training course for staff who work in Paediatric Hospital settings followed by Application to Practice Groups.

Training model:

Target Learners

All NHS and partnership paediatric staff who work with children and young people who have long-term physical health conditions.

How to access this training

  • Contact your local Paediatric Psychology service to find out if they offer this training in your area.
  • E-mail NES Psychology (psychology@nes.scot.nhs) to obtain the contact details for your local paediatric psychology team and the team members who are trained to deliver our training.
  • Check on Portal for national training dates.
  • This training can be delivered remotely (via MS Teams) or face-to-face.

All local trainers are Clinical Psychologists trained by NES to deliver this training and coaching as part of their job role.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

One-hour training event plus follow-up Application to Practice Groups to ensure consistent implementation of new skills in practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding anxiety and recognising how it may present in paediatrics.
  • Understanding anxiety in the context of Covid-19.
  • Developing skills in helping children and their parents/carers understand anxiety and how it presents.
  • Developing knowledge of basic anxiety management strategies and skills and how/when they may help.

 

Supports

Delivery is supported via powerpoint slides. Trainers are trained by NES to ensure standardised delivery of the content.

Supports - Workforce

Ring-fenced time to attend the training plus follow-up Application to Practice Groups.

Supports - Technology

If the training is delivered via Teams staff will need access to laptops / computers and internet connections. Impact data are collected via MS Form and sent to NES directly who will collate and analyse these data and feed them back to local areas to enhance the training offer to suit learner's needs.

Supports - Administrative

Local Clinical Psychology staff are asked to manage room bookings and disseminate learning materials (bespoke folders) to delegates.

Evidence base

  • Based on established psychological theories and principles and informed by Cognitive Behaviour Therapy which is the evidence based approach for anxiety in children and young people.

REACTS data are collected at each training event via MS form and analysed by NES

Pre and post knowledge and confidence self-assessment is collected via MS forms at the training, and analysed by NES.

Behaviour

Coaching sessions (Application to Practice Groups) may also be offered by the trainers.

Results

This resource aims to change staff practices rather than intervene directly with children and young people.
