Training in Psychological Skills - Physical Health: Promoting Positive Behaviour

This half day skilled-level training is designed to increase skills and confidence in understanding how behaviour is learnt, how behaviour is reinforced or discouraged and how to assess and make sense of children and young people’s behaviour.  It is also designed to upskill healthcare workers in using reward-based approaches with children and young people with physical healthcare needs.

Training course for staff who work in Paediatric Hospital settings.

Training model:

Target Learners

All NHS and partnership paediatric staff who work with children and young people who have long-term physical health conditions.

How to access this training

  • Contact your local Paediatric Psychology service to find out if they offer this training in your area.
  • E-mail NES Psychology (psychology@nes.scot.nhs) to obtain the contact details for your local paediatric psychology team and the team members who are trained to deliver our training.
  • Check on Portal for national training dates.
  • This training can be delivered remotely (via MS Teams) or face-to-face.

All local trainers are Clinical Psychologists trained by NES to deliver this training and coaching as part of their job role.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

Half-day training event plus follow-up Application to Practice Groups to ensure consistent implementation of new skills in practice.

Ring-fenced time to attend the half-day training plus follow-up Application to Practice Groups.

If the training is delivered via Teams staff will need access to laptops / computers and internet connections. Impact data are collected via MS Form and sent to NES directly who will collate and analyse these data and feed them back to local areas to enhance the training offer to suit learner's needs.

Supports - Administrative

Local Clinical Psychology staff are asked to manage room bookings and disseminate learning materials (bespoke folders) to delegates.

This resource aims to change staff practices rather than intervene directly with children and young people.
