Training in Psychological Skills - Physical Health: Working with Autistic children and young people

Impact Assessments:

A 1-hour bitesize training module at the informed- and skilled- levels, focused on increasing awareness and understanding of autism, how it may present in paediatrics and some of the strategies you can use to support Autistic children and young people when they attend hospital.

This is a one hour training module delivered either face to face or virtually, e.g., via Teams.

Training model:

Target Learners

All NHS and partnership paediatric staff who work with children and young people who have long-term physical health conditions.

How to access this training

  • Contact your local Paediatric Psychology service to find out if they offer this training in your area.
  • E-mail NES Psychology (psychology@nes.scot.nhs) to obtain the contact details for your local paediatric psychology team and the team members who are trained to deliver our training.
  • Check on Portal for national training dates.
  • This training can be delivered remotely (via MS Teams) or face-to-face.

All local trainers are Clinical Psychologists trained by NES to deliver this training and coaching as part of their job role.

Staff capacity and time commitment:

One-hour training event plus follow-up Application to Practice Groups to ensure consistent implementation of new skills in practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core features of Autism and their potential impact on how an Autistic child or young person copes with hospital settings.
  • Understand about the sensory processing difficulties Autistic people can experience and what environmental changes in hospital might help with this.
  • Learn strategies to help support Autistic CYP to cope with long-term health conditions. 

Supports

Delivery is supported via powerpoint slides. Trainers are trained by NES to ensure standardised delivery of the content.

Ring-fenced time to attend the training plus follow-up Application to Practice Groups.

Supports - Technology

If the training is delivered via Teams staff will need access to laptops / computers and internet connections. Impact data are collected via MS Form and sent to NES directly who will collate and analyse these data and feed them back to local areas to enhance the training offer to suit learner's needs.

Supports - Administrative

Local Clinical Psychology staff are asked to manage room bookings and disseminate learning materials (bespoke folders) to delegates.

REACTS data are collected at each training event via MS form and analysed by NES.

Pre and post knowledge and confidence self-assessment is collected via MS forms at the training, and analysed by NES.

Behaviour

  • Coaching sessions (Application to Practice Groups) may also be offered by the trainers.

Results

This resource aims to change staff practices rather than intervene directly with children and young people.
