This 3-hour webinar provides an understanding of ADHD as it presents in girls and women and focuses on how girls and women with ADHD are often missed, misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Information is provided about how ADHD can present differently in girls and women, the impact of female hormones on ADHD, the bias of teachers, clinicians and the public and most importantly what we can do differently going forward.

Training model:

All staff who need to understand, and support, ADHD in girls and women as part of their job role. This learning will be most beneficial to staff who already have a good understanding of typical child development. This webinar could be used as part of a broader skills development exercise, e.g., reflective practice / service development groups.

NES commissioned this resource and it was delivered by Dr Joanne Steer (Consultant Clinical Psychologist) & Claire Berry (ADHD specialist Mental Health Nurse).

Dr Jo Steer qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2004 and is now Associate Director for the Emotional Health Service at Achieving for Children in South West London. This service is commissioned to provide child & adolescent mental health services including neurodevelopmental assessments for ASD and ADHD. Jo edited and contributed to “Understanding ADHD in Girls & Women” in 2021, which has been described as “the most important book written in the field of ADHD for many, many years”. Jo provides training for the workforce and has been interviewed for many podcasts on ADHD in girls and women. Jo has also authored “Supporting Kids & Teens with Exam Stress in School A Workbook” and co-authored “Helping Kids & Teens with ADHD in School A Workbook”.

Claire Berry is a qualified Mental Health Nurse and BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. Since qualifying in 2009 she has worked within different CAMHS settings including psychiatric inpatient units and community settings. Her work has included providing psychological intervention to children and young people presenting with a range of mental health difficulties. Claire also provides Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessments. Claire co-authored “Assessment of ADHD in Girls: Unlocking Hidden Superpowers through Understanding ADHD” in “Understanding ADHD in Girls and Women published in 2021.
